Seher ShahSeher Shah

Born in Karachi in 1975, Seher Shah has lived in several different countries including Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and the United States. Her work is generally a response to her upbringing and her multinational as well as multicultural identity. “Having personally grown up in many disparate cultures Shah's nostalgic mise en scène is a construction of icons, symbols, and public and private spaces. Through her thoughtful and innovative draughtsmanship, Shah presents the viewer with a dynamic landscape of imagined recollection. Shah's work portrays the organic amalgam of recreating childhood scenes synthesizing location and sentiment into a kinetic alternate space of memory; memory which makes no distinction between public and private happenings” (Bose Pacia, New York).

The central influence on Shah’s work is her Islamic identity, particularly her processes of coming to terms with being a Muslim in a Western World, where she constantly has to face and answer questions about her ‘origins’ and her ethnicity. Her ‘cube’ works on paper are a reference to the use of the form in her religion and the title of her latest series of works, ‘Jihad Pop’, also refers to the often tempestuous relationship between the tenets of Islam and contemporary society.

In 2007, Shah was voted one of the most significant emerging artists by Frieze Magazine. Shah’s solo exhibitions include, most recently 'Paper to Monument' at Nature Morte, New Delhi, in 2009; 'Jihad Pop' at Bose Pacia Gallery, New York, in 2008; and 'The Black Star' at Momenta Art, Brooklyn, in 2007. Her work has been a part of several group exhibitions including 'How Nations are Made' at Green Cardamom, London, in 2009; 'The Last Sessions' at the Flemish Cultural Center, Amsterdam, in 2009; 'Bad Moon Rising' at Galerie Sans Titre, Brussels, in 2009; and 'The Labyrinth Wall: From Mythology to Reality' at Exit Art, New York, in 2008. Shah graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, in 1998.

Seher Shah lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
